I finally got to see the premiere of Supergirl and I'm not honestly too sure what to think of it. It's everything that the trailers made it out to be, so if you've really enjoyed the trailers so far, then I'm almost positive that you will be entertained by this premiere. As for me, I was just fascinated at the fact that we were actually getting a Supergirl live action show to begin with and after watching the first episode, I feel the same way basically. I'm more shocked and intrigued at the idea of the show existing at all more than the show itself. It was okay overall considering that I knew what I was getting myself into in the first place.
The visual FX first off were pretty standard for television now-a-days with some standout scenes looking pretty amazing (the airplane rescue scene for example). So far the characters are fine for the most part with Kara's boss being a bit too stereotypical in the "bitchy female boss" category almost giving off a "Devil Wear Prada" vibe than I'm not entirely a fan of. As for Kara herself, I can honestly say that I'm already on board with the actress that they chose for the star role. Everything from there perkiness to even the more dramatic moments came across rather well (again considering what I imagined already going into the show). I loved the quick glimpse and mentions of Superman's existence although I'm curious to know how an entire series will handle a world where Superman exists without feeling the tantalizing need to throw the spotlight on him from time to time. Perhaps the producers and/or writers would like to ensure that audiences fall in love with Supergirl as a powerful superhero and avoid downsizing her character next to the big guy himself. Speaking of which, I'm liking the idea of Jimmy Olsen as being sort of the connecting tissue between not only Kara and Superman, but the fans as well. Something tells me that every episode or so, Jimmy will either have something physical to show or something to tell about Superman's current doings in the world. Also really like the idea of her new cape being his baby blanket from Krypton. However, I could've sworn bullets were not tearing through her top which makes me wonder what it's made out of and where she got it from.
Now, for one of my favorite parts of any superhero show or film, let's talk about the villain(s) in this episode. The villain in the pilot unfortunately was dull and uninteresting overall not only as a threat, but as a character overall. However, I do understand that first episode villains in superhero shows are usually not as significant, so one should not expect much from the premiere episode unless the series's main villain is introduced from the beginning as a few shows have done in the past. I'm hoping that we do get some interesting and hopefully memorable villains in future episodes and not just your typical "villain of the week" run of bottom of the barrel B rate enemies wrecking havoc only to get beat down in the end of each episode. That Krypton prison escape concept is basically the show's way of having a whole gallery of bad guys to show up each week which is perfect considering the potential of what type of aliens from around the galaxy would've been locked up in such a place.
Much like other comic book television series currently in their successful run, there will always be a few dull and easily forgettable baddies for the hero to punch around, but characters such as Slade/Deathstroke (Arrow), The Reverse Flash (The Flash), and Kingpin (Daredevil) are examples of villains done right and are now beloved and memorable from many fans of those shows. Supergirl will hopefully encounter such characters of magnitude, but for now, let's hope for the best as throw away villains can still make for some great action scenes (something I'm hoping this show to do really well considering the star character's abilities). The fight scene that we do get in the end was neither great nor disappointing but somewhere down the borderline of passable and pretty decent. I can tell just by the first episode that the producers of the show are not afraid to throw loads of money at the visual FX department as we do get glimpses of large scale money shots that hopefully imply an action packed, fun, and spectacle filled first season.
Overall, I can't say that I'm completely head over heels for Supergirl, but I will say that I was impressed enough with what I saw to check out the next episode with hopes of being blown away by something amazing whether from a new character reveal, story arc, or spectacular eye candy action scene. Supergirl as far as I can tell is a series filled with potential, so all I can do now is hope for the best.
