Killjoys was one of those new TV series that snuck up on me by surprise and yelled "Hey!!! Don't give up on television yet just because some of your favorite shows got canceled!". So with that warm welcome, I watched the series premiere with open eyes and open arms. From the first shot of the different planets in space as well as the spaceship flying through, I immediately felt the "Syfy Channel Original Series" tag written all over it. Take that statement as you may, but I find that some shows actually profit from B grade visual FX given if the tone itself is more on the over the top fun side. After watching the episode in its entirety, I'm starting to believe that the show will definitely have fun with its characters and world as with its action scenes in the way that we've seen in films like the Resident Evil series, Wanted, etc.
Although I'm all up for a bit of intentional campiness in my science-fiction adventure, I do hope that the story, characters, and lore is given a great deal of attention as I do see potential scattered all over this universe. What I'm hoping for is something along the lines of a Guardians of the Galaxy type of tone where you get a lovely dosage of fun, adventure, action, a little bit of self-awareness (when necessary), a great sense of comedic timing, a decent enough story to tie everything together, and most importantly, entertaining and interesting characters to follow along. The visual FX will only improve if the budget is there, so there's no need for me to jump all over it at this point (although those mini mechanical spider gadgets were cool to look during one of the action scenes).
Killjoys is a breath of fresh air and a much needed one honestly, but let's just hope and see where the next few episodes takes us before making any bold statements. The first episode is significant in introducing us to the world and giving us a reason why we may want to check out what this series has to offer. However, it is the 2nd episode that begins to sell us in on why we should actually stay aboard.
